Tropical islands like the Canaries in Spain are the ideal getaway for travelers from the mainland and elsewhere. The weather is perfect and the environment is so different that one can forget their troubles back home. But what about the island locals, for whom life on the island isn’t a fantasy getaway?
Because tourism makes up such a great percentage of the Canary economy, many resources are directed towards attracting vacationers, and large portions of the islands are privatized for resorts and hotels. Additionally, locals are less protected against natural disasters like annual flooding events. This project envisions a public space for the people that protects and enriches local communities.
